Wasting Lees Food Saves Resources and Money - And Might Even S

World hunger is another reason to care about food waste. There are 842 Million people in the world suffering from chronic hunger. We produce enough food today to feed them all - 4,600 calories per person per day worldwide - but ultimately only 2,000 calories to 2,800 calories per person are available for consumption and even that is not getting to those who in need most.

With more than 9 billion people expected on the planet in 2050, and diets are increasingly dependent on meat, the challenge of feeding ourselves will only become more difficult. The united nations forecast that we’ll need up to 60% more food to feed that projected population. To achieve this, it estimates that about another 170 Million acres of farmland will be required, along with a significant increase in yields from existing croplands in developing countries, putting even more strain on already limited natural resources such as fresh water. All of these eliminates assume no reduction in the amount of food that is wasted.

There is a huge opportunity to meet some of our global food needs by reducing the amount of food that goes uneaten. Some experts believe that cutting food losses in half could cover 22% of gap in future food needs. Reducing the amount of food that is wasted will also reduce pressure to intensify production on existing cropland or convert natural land to food production. One projection estimates that reducing food waste at the consumer level by 30% could save roughly 100 Million acres of cropland by 2030.

Much of the world has already caught on the importance of food conservation. In January - 2012, the European Parliament adopted a resolution to reduce food waste by 50% by 2020 and designated 2014 as the European year against food waste. It’s member said that “ The most important problem in the feature will be tackle increased demand for food, as it will outstrip supply. We can no longer offered to stand by while perfectly edible food is wasted. This is an ethical but also an economical problem, with huge implications for the environment.

In the United States, reducing looses by one- third would save enough food equal the total diets of all 50 Million food-insecure Americans- if only this food could actually be captured and distributed to them.
